Frequently Asked Questions
How our no-cost pool repair referral service works, plus common questions about pool equipment, leaks, water, and safety.
Quick answers about how Ventura County Pool Pros works. For questions about a specific job, the provider you are connected with is the right person to ask.
How the service works
Is Ventura County Pool Pros a contractor?
No. Ventura County Pool Pros is a no-cost referral service. We connect you with an independent local pool technician or contractor, and that business does the work, gives the estimate, and is responsible for its own license, permits, insurance, and workmanship.
How much does it cost to use this service?
Nothing. Using the website and submitting a request cost you nothing, and you are never obligated to hire anyone. Providers support the service. See our referral disclosure for details.
How many companies will contact me?
We share your request with one independent local provider who serves your area.
Which areas do you cover?
All of Ventura County, including Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Westlake, Oak Park, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Camarillo, Ventura, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Ojai, and unincorporated communities.
How do I check a pool contractor?
Ask for the California contractor license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov, ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation, and get a written estimate before work starts.
Pool equipment, water, and safety
Why does my pool pump lose prime?
Common causes are low water level, clogged baskets, a dry or damaged lid O-ring, or an air leak on the suction side. If clearing baskets and checking the lid doesn't help, have a technician check the suction plumbing.
Can I drain my pool myself?
It's better to ask a pro first. Draining can damage a pool in some ground conditions, and many local agencies restrict where chlorinated or salty water can go.
Is it safe to swim in a cloudy pool?
No. Cloudy water hides the bottom, which makes it hard to see someone in trouble, and it can signal low sanitizer. Clear and balance the water first.
What does California require for pool safety?
When a permit is issued for a new pool or spa, or a pool or spa remodel, at a single-family home, state law requires at least two of the listed drowning prevention features, such as an isolation fence, a safety cover, or alarms. Your building department has the details.
What should I do if I smell gas near my pool heater?
Leave the area, keep others away, and call 911 or SoCalGas from a safe distance. Don't try to light or reset the heater.
How long does pool plaster last?
It varies widely with the finish type, water chemistry, and care. Balanced water is the biggest factor. A technician can tell you whether your surface needs resurfacing or just a treatment.
