Pool Filter Repair & Cleaning in Ventura County
High pressure, short run times, or water that never gets clear? We connect you with one independent local pool technician who works on cartridge, DE, and sand filters.
A pool filter traps dirt so the sanitizer can do its job. When the filter is dirty, torn, or bypassing water, the pool clouds up even when the chemistry looks right. The fix might be a cleaning, new cartridges or grids, new sand, or a new tank, and a technician can usually tell which within one visit.
Which type of filter do I have?
- Cartridge filters use pleated fabric elements that are removed and hosed off. They are common in Southern California because they don't need backwashing, which saves water.
- DE (diatomaceous earth) filters use grids coated with a fine powder. They filter very fine particles but need careful handling of spent DE.
- Sand filters push water through a bed of sand or alternative media and are cleaned by backwashing.
The label on the tank usually gives the brand and model. A photo of it helps the technician bring the right parts.
What does high filter pressure mean?
Every filter has a "clean" pressure reading after service. When the gauge climbs well above that starting point, the filter is loaded with dirt and needs cleaning. Pressure that jumps right after cleaning can mean a clogged return line or a valve that is partly closed. Pressure that is unusually low can mean a suction problem, a clogged pump basket, or a torn element letting water bypass. Note your clean pressure in a phone photo so you have a baseline.
Signs the filter needs repair, not just cleaning
- DE or sand blowing back into the pool after cleaning, which often means a torn grid or broken laterals.
- Cartridges with flattened, torn, or calcified pleats that no longer rinse clean.
- A crack in the tank or a leaking clamp band or O-ring.
- A pressure gauge stuck at zero or not moving.
- Water that stays cloudy even with balanced chemistry and a full run time.
Safety around filter tanks
Filter tanks are under pressure while the pump runs. A tank lid or clamp that is opened, or loosened, while pressurized can separate with real force. Turn the pump off, open the air relief valve, and let the pressure drop before anyone touches the clamp. If the clamp band looks corroded or cracked, have it replaced rather than reusing it. If you are not comfortable with any of this, leave it to the technician.
Hard water and filters in Ventura County
Hard water is common in much of Ventura County, and calcium can coat cartridge pleats and DE grids over time so they never quite rinse clean. Technicians sometimes soak elements in a degreaser or a mild acid cleaner, then rinse. Ask what product they use and how waste water is handled. Spent DE powder and cleaning solutions should not be rinsed into the street or a storm drain.
How often should a filter be cleaned?
There is no single schedule. A pool under trees, a pool after Santa Ana winds, or a pool after wildfire ash will load a filter much faster than a screened pool in a quiet yard. Many owners clean when pressure rises a set amount above clean, and do a deeper cleaning a few times a year. Your technician can suggest a routine for your filter size.
Hiring tips
Ask for a written price that lists parts (cartridges, grids, manifolds, sand, O-rings) separately from labor. Check the contractor's license at cslb.ca.gov and ask for proof of liability insurance. If the filter is undersized for your pump or pool, ask about options before replacing it with the same model.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my pool cloudy when the chemicals look fine?
Poor filtration is a common cause: a dirty or torn filter element, short pump run time, or water bypassing the filter. A technician can check pressure, flow, and the filter internals.
How long do pool filter cartridges last?
It varies with use, debris, and water hardness. Replace cartridges when the fabric tears, the pleats flatten, or they no longer rinse clean. Your technician can tell you when they are worn.
Can I put spent DE in the trash or the gutter?
Do not rinse DE into the street or storm drain. Ask your technician or your city's waste program how to dispose of it. Wear a dust mask when handling dry DE powder.
